From Ordinary to Extraordinary Custom Cabinets and Kitchen Designs

April 13, 2016

Custom cabinets and kitchen designs go hand in hand when it comes to elegance. In fact, professional custom cabinets will immediately transform a kitchen from ordinary to extraordinary. And when it comes to well organized and functionality, custom cabinets are right at home.

But, kitchen cabinetry can make or break your kitchens style and functionality and well as your pocket book. However, having a basic plan and knowing what you want will make a huge difference in the outcome.

Selecting a Kitchen Design

When selecting custom cabinets and kitchen designs, there are many factors to take into consideration. For instance, door style will change the whole look of a kitchen and different drawer types can add functionality.

Door Styles

When deciding on door styles there are many variables such as flat, inset and Shaker. In truth, door style is the most important element of your cabinetry and kitchen. Standard swinging doors are safe when it comes to fashion and popularity. There are even different types of swinging doors. But if you desire something different and more functional then you should select pocket, corner or flip-up doors to make your life stress-free.

Pocket Doors – These doors are most often used to hide heavily used prep areas in the kitchen. Each cabinet has a small internal pocket (around 3 inches) on the side. They look just like a regular cabinet door, when they are closed they slide back into place.

Flip-up Doors – Also known as parallel lift-up doors, are a very popular European style. Rather than opening the traditional way they have hydraulic devices that raise the door up. They are the perfect door for specialty areas such as for a coffee or tea station.

Tambour Doors – The tambour or garage door opens from top to bottom, sliding up and down on a track. It is the ideal door for hiding small appliances such as blenders, toasters, waffles irons or coffee makers.

Other popular door types include sliding, glass front and track.

Door Styles

Door style is also a very important element when you want to transform your kitchen into something amazing but functional. Some styles to consider are Shaker, flat, inset, distressed and beadboard.

Shaker - the most common door style which uses simple lines and emphasis on functionality. It goes with most any type of décor.

Flat – very stylish with clean simple lines and minimal detail. This is an ideal style for modern décor.

Inset – Although one of the most lavish, this style has a classic look that last for many years. Construction and design are very precise so that the door sits perfectly inside the frame to open and close correctly. Plus, each door has two exposed hinges.

Distressed – An old style look that goes well with antiques, Tuscany or Old World French designs. It is a torn and tattered look done with finesse.

Beadboard - this style has a cottage look and feel. In fact, the center doors are made to look like traditional beadboard paneling. This style can uplift your kitchen and make it bright and airy. However, the small crevasses and cracks on the doors need to be maintained to keep its clean look.
